Tour Jean sans Peur on May 3, 2012 at 5pm,
and afterwards at the acclaimed bistrot, Le Père Fouettard,

accompanied by Professor Marisa Galvez of Stanford University.

Far-away love, Lancelot and Guinevere, the grail: Many people are familiar with these concepts and names from the Middle Ages, but how does medieval literature about love and chivalry resonate today beyond the clichés of popular media? Professor Marisa Galvez will discuss how the troubadours and Chrétien de Troyes invented an art of love that critically reflected upon ethical and moral dilemmas through the sophisticated game of romance and lead us on a tour of a medieval tower in the heart of Paris.

First, we invite you to a guided tour of the le Tour Jean sans Peur where Professor Galvez and three other guides will help us discover this tower.  A fabulous exposition on wine in the Middle Ages awaits us.

Then, if desired, you can join us for a three-course dinner at Le Père Fouettard, an historic bistrot right next to the tower, where Professor Galvez shall talk about why the art of medieval love today.

Marisa Galvez is an Assistant Professor of French at Stanford University.  She specializes in medieval literature and culture, especially the lyric of the troubadours.  She also teaches courses on romance and the afterlife of medieval culture in film, literature, and art.

Participants will be able to ask their questions and we will have an informal give-and-take salon format with Prof Switzer introducing each discussion topic among which :
What is the evidence for global warming and the role of carbon emissions? What is the scientific consensus and where are the acknowledged uncertainties? How do we assess potential effects on agriculture, including wine growing, here in France and elsewhere? What are the prospects for human migration as a response to climate change? Can we attribute historical crises to past changes in climate? What are strategies for mitigating future climate change?

Paul Switzer joined the faculty at Stanford University in 1965 with a joint appointment in the Statistics Department and in the School of Earth Sciences – and remained on the faculty at Stanford through his entire career.  His research has focused principally on the applications of statistical methods to the understanding of environmental problems such as detecting trends in climate and in environmental quality and assessing human exposure to environmental contamination.  He is the former editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association and has served on panels advising government agencies and professional organizations.

For those who wish, the discussion will be followed by dinner at the nearby well-known restaurant La Poule au Pot.

With Western medicine and new technologies transforming the landscape of medicine and health care, what are the other options today?  Are alternative and complementary medicines now becoming mainstream?  Does hypnosis work?
What are the psychological factors in hypnosis that can help control pain, stop additive habits, or overcome traumas?

David Spiegel, M.D. the Jack, Lulu and Sam Willson Professor in the School of Medicine and Associate,
Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine will enlighten us, or animate the debate.  Professor Spiegel directs the Stanford Center on Stress and Health. He is the author of ten books and more than 500 scientific articles and chapters on hypnosis, complementary and alternative medicine, emotional support for cancer patients and treating trauma. He has appeared on numerous television programs,  including Bill Moyers’ Healing and the Mind, Oprah, Good Morning America, the Today Show, and the Jane Pauley Show. Dr. Spiegel’s research interests involve stress and health: the neurophysiology of hypnosis, cognitive control over physical functions, including cancer progression, the response to traumatic stress, and the perception of pain and anxiety.
